PLSC - Political Science

Alfred State courses are grouped into the following sections:

  • An introduction to American Government. Besides the basic framework and institutions of government, the student will examine the politics of participation, including formation of public opinion, voting behavior, and the activities of interest groups. Also emphasized are the national policies regarding the economy, foreign relations, defense, and natural resources.

  • The dynamics of the nation-state and their interrelationship. Attention will be given to the position of the United States as a world power, from its beginning in the early 1900’s throughout the 20th century and into the present. Topics will include U.S. foreign policies and relations with former and present Communist countries; problems faced by less developed countries, international organizations, and peace and security issues. An emphasis will be placed on current events and “hot” spots around the world.
  • This course allows students who have successfully completed a previous course in political science to continue study in that subject. A student may contract for one to four credit hours. Directed study may be contracted by a student only with the approval of the directing instructor and the department chair.
