Landscape design and contruction make outdoor surroundings attractive and functional. Graduates trained in landscape design, landscape contracting, and plant health care are needed to fill the jobs created by the increased demand for nursery products and landscape services.
The industry is diversified in that there are jobs available for the individual who likes either indoor or outdoor work. A person may go into the business, science, production, design, construction or maintenance component of the industry.
This program benefits from an articulation agreement with Cornell University.
Many schools, including Cornell University, grant full credit to students wishing to transfer to four-year programs.
Landscape students spend 18-24 hours per week in class. Up to 70 percent of that time is spent at the Horticulture Center Complex and the remainder is spent on the Alfred campus. Bus service is provided to the Horticulture Center. Most laboratory classes have fewer than 24 students, and the very intensive hands-on labs will have fewer than 15 students. Most of our courses have a laboratory experience where students practice and learn through hands-on situations. Most of these labs are two hours in length with some lasting three-four hours. Each student is assigned a faculty adviser to assist him/her in answering any questions as well as scheduling courses and locating summer and permanent jobs.
