Federal Work Programs

There are two types of Federal Work Programs available to students at Alfre State. It is college policy that a student may not be employed more than 20 hours per week during an academic period or 40 hours per week in a summer campus position. The following is a brief description of each federal program:

Work Study Program

This program is a portion of Federal financial aid, it is a program designed to provide eligible students an opportunity to earn a portion of their educational expenses through campus and community service based employment. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Federal government through the processing of the student's annual submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Work Study program at Alfred State typically employs 350 students during the academic year, working an average of 6 hours per week, and another 50 students in full time positions during the summer. Student employees receive a paycheck on a bi-weekly basis.

A Work Study allocation is initially awarded to two groups of students: the first 300 accepted students each academic year whose eligibility has been documented through the filing of their FAFSA and/or student employees whose supervisors have requested that they return to their positions. Every effort is made by the campus student employment coordinator to place students into jobs that will prove beneficial or supplement their educational experience or serve the student's stated need, such as a specific work schedule.

Work Grant Program

The Work Grant Program is an opportunity for a limited number of selected students, who are not Work Study eligible, to be employed in an on-campus position and for campus employers to hire those students whose specific talents are needed. The funding for this program is through the generosity of the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., a private foundation representing faculty, staff, and friends of the college. Similar to Work Study, Work Grant student employees work an average of 6 hours per week and also receive their paycheck on a bi-weekly basis.
