Description:

The automotive parts technology program is a two-year AAS program that will complement the existing automotive trades programs on the campus. A local business runs an active auto-parts store on the Wellsville Campus, where students are regularly exposed to its operation. The goal of the program is to supply automotive parts stores with entry-level employees. The automotive parts technology program will develop in students the necessary skills to succeed in the broad area of automotive parts store operation. The knowledge areas and skills developed will include basic computer operation, communication, business operation, automotive parts management, automotive parts identification, pricing strategies, and inventory control. Graduates of the program will be employed by automotive parts stores, automotive dealers, and larger fleet operations at construction companies or municipalities and larger institutions that have their own fleets and maintenance organizations.

Students receive instruction liberal arts and sciences courses (1/3) and curriculum-specific courses (2/3). Graduates may enter the workforce or, continue their education at Alfred State in the technology management baccalaureate program.

Technical Standards
Applicants in the automotive parts technology program must meet the following physical requirements.

  1. Must be able to perform safely in the shop.
  2. Must be able to lift 50 pounds up to eye level.
  3. Must be able to communicate orally with a person 6-10 feet away.
  4. Must have a valid motor vehicle license
  5. Must be able to visually read from a computer monitor or laptop. 6. Must have good hand/eye coordination to operate the above.

Features & Facilities:

  • Automotive Parts Store and Learning Laboratory
    • Future plans for the automotive parts program at Alfred State College include building a new state-of-the-art automotive parts store on campus to enhance the existing parts store capabilities.
    • Preliminary plans indicate that a 4,000 SF to 5,000 SF building would provide the ideal space for a fully functioning automotive parts store and adequate classroom/laboratory space for students. The automotive parts store would provide service to all of Alfred State College's Automotive Trades programs, while at the same time provide live, hands-on learning experience for students enrolled in the automotive parts technology curriculum. State-of-the art equipment and computers (with the appropriate software) would be at the fingertips of students who will be entering the workforce as automotive parts store managers.

Graduation Requirements:

  • successfully complete the prescribed sequence of courses
  • achieve a minimum index of 2.0 in their core courses
  • achieve a minimum index of 2.0 overall
  • be recommended by the department faculty

Transfer Opportunities:

Graduates will be eligible to continue into the technology management program (BBA).
