As part of your preparation for college, please be aware that there will be expenses for required textbooks and supplies in addition to tuition and other fees. On the first day of class, you will be required to have the supplies listed below for lecture and lab. It is strongly recommended the equipment be insured under the student's or parents' homeowner's insurance.
Also due to the changing technology in the robotic and computerized control technician curriculum, we now require the students to purchase a laptop computer. You must have a computer on the first day of class. The laptop computer will be used during all four semesters at Alfred State College. Some of the things that you will be using the laptop for are: word processing, spreadsheets, data acquisition, data manipulation, Internet access, and PLC programming. Laptop computers, which meet these requirements, should be available at the Campus Bookstore for approximately $1,700 or you may purchase one and bring it with you. It must be IBM compatible and meet or exceed the following requirements:
- Microprocessor-Pentium II (minimum)
- RAM - 256 MB (minimum)
- Operating system - Windows XP Professional ONLY
- Software - Microsoft Office XP Professional, Virus scanning (Norton)
- Network card - Wireless network card (available at the Campus Store)

- 12" combination square - good quality (readable to ½ inches)
- Scientific calculator - Texas Instrument Model TI-35 plus or equivalent
Education is an expensive and worthwhile undertaking, with the cost being repaid many times over in the years to come. You will need the proper tools and supplies to accomplish this.
