What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Interlibrary
Loans are transactions in which library materials are made available by one
library to another for the use of an individual. Books, periodical articles
(in photocopy or fax form) and non-print materials may be requested.
Who can request ILLs?
ILL service is available to all students,
faculty and staff of Alfred State College.
Copyright and ILL
Requests must conform to US Copyright Laws
and Guidelines:
- Rule of five: Only five articles
from a periodical title published in the last five years may be obtained
in any calendar year
- No more than one article in an individual issue of a periodical
may be obtained in any calendar year
How to request an ILL
How long does it take?
- Allow a minimum of 14 days for the item to arrive
- When requesting
ILL's, you MUST indicate on the form the latest date you can use
the materials and if you will accept charges.
Charges and Penalties
- ASC
does not charge; however, some libraries, especially large research libraries
charge to send items - generally expect $15.00 per item. We would
notify you of any charges before proceeding with your request.
- Charges
made by the lending library are the direct responsibility of the person
who requested the material.
- Indicate
on the form a willingness to pay and the amount.
- You, the requester,
are responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged materials as
imposed by the lending library.
- A hold will be placed on a student's ASC Banner and Hinkle Library accounts if interlibrary loan materials are not returned on time or until all replacement
costs are received.
- Repeated
violation of the interlibrary loan service may suspend or terminate a
patron's privilege to use the interlibrary loan service.
Borrowing Period
- Photocopies
or faxes may be kept by the requester.

Loan
period and conditions are set by the lending library
for books
and non-print media.
- Renewals
are not encouraged.
- Borrowers
must return items no later than the due date. Fines will be charged for
late materials
