In order to serve the transportation needs of our international students, the Office of International Education stipulates the following policy:
The College will provide free transportation service to international students who arrive in the U.S. for the very first time. The College will provide transportation only from Rochester International Airport to Alfred State College. If students fly into other airports in New York State, they must use alternative transportation services for travel to Alfred State College. These services include Trailways Bus, taxi, or limousine.
Only College vehicles can be used for transporting students. All drivers must be College certified faculty, staff, or students. To be certified, drivers must register with ACES and complete all of the requirements. The Office of International Education will pay the processing fee only for those drivers wishing to provide transportation for international students.
For returning students and students transferred from other U.S. schools, we strongly recommend that they use the bus or taxi service. If students would like the College to provide transportation, there will be a $50 charge per student. All buses or vans will be scheduled through ACES at Alfred State College. The money charged for each student pays for rental of the van, the driver, first time student arrivals, and the 6% administrative cost of maintaining an IFR account in which all transportation fees will be deposited.
Students must submit their request for transportation to the Office of International Education ten (10) business days before service is needed. For arrival at Rochester International Airport, a College representative will meet students by the baggage claim area. For departure, students should wait for the bus at Orvis or the Administration Building.
In order to keep costs low and to increase the likelihood of finding available drivers, students should try to avoid arriving or departing on weekends, during holidays or at very early or late hours.
It is the responsibility of the student to provide to the International Education Office the following information:
In the event of weather delays, flight cancellations, or missed flights, the International Education Office should be contacted at (607) 587-4058 in order to reschedule drivers for airport pick-up. If these changes in flight schedules occur after working hours while traveling, it is best to contact the University Police Office at (607) 587-3999. An officer will inform personnel in the International Education Office as soon as possible to relay your message.
